![]() ![]() We'll be looking at ways you can make connections in the next chapter. But remember that you also have be connected to people in order to write a recommendation or receive one from them. If you receive a recommendation, you have the ability to accept it and display it on your page or dismiss it and it won't show up anywhere. Now be aware that recommendations don't automatically show up on someone's profile. So if I click on that, I can write a recommendation for Tracy unprompted. You'll also notice in this menu that we can Recommend. And when I click on that, we get the same popup box that we saw before. So I have that open here already and here on Tracy's page, we have this More button, which gives us several options and one of them is Request a recommendation. Now another way I could request a recommendation would be to navigate to that person's LinkedIn page. And when you're done, you can click Send and they will receive your request. ![]() ![]() People will appreciate this because it allows them to get started with writing it. Basically, when asking for a recommendation, you should put some effort into it and tell the person why you want a recommendation, why you value their input, and even which of your skills you'd like them to mention. I worked at Red30 Tech on the project we did for your company last year, and I would love it if you could speak about our collaboration and what you thought I brought to the team. I was wondering if you would be willing to write a recommendation for me on LinkedIn. I'm going to delete that and paste in one that I already have copied. So try to write something a little bit more personal. Hi, Tracy, would you write me a recommendation please? But you should definitely personalize it a bit, because right now, it just is kind of generic and doesn't really show that you really want that recommendation. Now down here's where you can write out the request for a recommendation. From the Position at the time menu, you'll select the job you have listed on your profile that you were working on when you were working with this person. In this case, we'll say that Tracy was a client of Michelle's. Was this person a manager, did they report to you, were they a client, and so on. And then you're asked to explain how you know this person. ![]() So I'll type in a name, Tracy, and because she's one of Michelle's connections, she shows up and I can select her. It can't just be any person you find, which makes sense, because you want people who actually know you and know your skillsets and talents to write your recommendations. Now this has to be someone you're connected to on LinkedIn. Now in this search field, you can type in the name of a connection you'd like to get a recommendation from. Now Michelle's account doesn't have any recommendations yet, so I'm going to click Add profile section and under the Recommended section, I'll click Add recommendations. It takes a little bit longer and it's more in-depth, but it does give them a much better opportunity to explain why they're willing to recommend you. However, you can also ask connections to write a recommendation for you on LinkedIn, which is more like asking them to write a traditional letter of recommendation. It's just a couple of clicks in most cases. Endorsing someone doesn't take too much effort. In the previous video, we discussed adding skills to your LinkedIn profile and how you can receive endorsements for those skills from your connections. ![]()
